It is an evergreen, moderate-sized, caespitose, loosely-clumped bamboo. Culms erect or sub-erect, 8-20m high, 5-15cm in diameter, bright green, yellowish on maturity, polished, shining, branching usually from medium to top, nodes prominent, lower ones often with a narrow ring of brown root; internodes up to 45cm long. walls 7 -15mm thick. Culm-sheaths 15-25cm long, 20-35cm broad, deciduous, often beautifully streaked when young with green and yellow, rounded at top and concavely truncate, striate, outer surface densely covered with thick appressed brown black hair, edges ciliate; auricles 2, subequal , falcate, conspicuous with the blae, ca 15cm high, with pale wavy, 6-8mm. long; ligule 5-7.5mm. broad, dentate, sometimes long fimbriate; imperfect blade triangular, acute, 5-15cm, up to 12cm broad at base, greenish yellow, appressed hairy within, margins bristly, rounded at the base and decurrent on the sheath. Leaves 15-32cm long, 2-4cm broad, narrowly or broadly lanceolate, rounded or attenuate at the base, ending above in a long, twisted, scabrous points, pale green, glabrous on both surfaces, main vein narrow, pale, secondary veins 6-8, intermediate 8-9, frequent pellucid gland giving the appearance beneath of transverse veinlets; petiole like base ca 5mm. long; Inflorescence a large, leafy, compound panicle, branch spike-like bearing heads of 3-10 spikelets in bracteate cluster. Spikelet erect, pedicelled, oblong-lanceolate, acute, compressed; glume 1or 2, ovate, acute, several-nerve, ciliate at the apex, 6-9 mm long; lemmas 8-15mm long, acuminate, cuspidate, attenuate at the base, paletas 7-14cm long, acute, 2 keeled, long, ciliate on the keels, faitly 3 nerved; lodicules 3, unequal.
