It is probably a hybrid species, but its origins are uncertain. It has compound leaves with 3 oval, long pointed leaflets. Flowers are insignificant individually, being very small; but they come out in balls 2—3 cm. across; the tiny flowers are yellow or yellowish in colour, often tinged with pink. When the little flowers open out, the most prominent parts are the styles, which form a sort of halo round the floral ball. Fruits are minute, forming an almost solid ball, which when ripe is black or nearly black.
