On the eve of Uttarkhand Diwas 6th WCDM along with Doon University conducts a on Panel Discussion on Resurgent Uttarakhand

Planned as a prelude to the 6th World Conference on Disaster Management scheduled from 28 October to 1 December 2023. The theme of the pre-conference panel discussion was on Resurgent Uttarakhand. On the eve of 23 years of Uttarakhand Diwas which will be celebrated on 9th Nov, the chief Minister who recently visited Mumbai where he met the industry group and said his aim to increase the GDP of Uttarakhand by 2x in the next 5 years. Uttarakhand is a unique state culturally, geologically and geographically from its neighbouring states.

The welcoming address of the pre-conference was by Prof. Rajendra P. Mamgain, Dean, School of Economics, Doon University. He said, as a part of Resurgent Uttarakhand, the economic markers are indicating how economically there are so many indicators which show that Uttarakhand is on the verge to be the most developed state. Uttarakhand is considered as a disaster-prone area just like Japan. However, in spite of all the disasters Uttarakhand resilient state and its people overcome those disasters quickly.

Prof. Durgesh Pant Director-General, UCOST, Government of Uttarakhand addressed the gathering who addressed the faculties, scientist, researchers and students he talked about the importance of the 6th WCDM and it’s the first time any such congress that is ever being held in Uttarakhand which is fragile, vulnerable, Himalayan ecosystem, mountain ecosystems and how communities live with in ecosystems. He said, “For a fragile and vulnerable ecosystem like Uttarakhand it should have resilience, preparedness, for a safe investment we need to be resilient and prepared. We should make economic and developmental plans that are technology based, scientific which are balanced and it helps balance our ecology & economy we can balance it. When all these verticals are addressed then we have a resurgent Uttarakhand.”

Amongst those present included Prof. Surekha Dangwal Vice-Chancellor, Doon University, Dr. Sanjeev Chopra, IAS (Retd.) former Director-General, LBSANA, Dr Gajendra Singh Scientist, Uttarakhand Space Application Centre, Prof. S.P. Singh, former Vice Chancellor, HNB Garhwal University & Chairman, CHIA, Prof. H.C. Purohit, Dean, School of Management, Doon University

This event is envisaged to provide a platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and the development of joint initiatives to enhance research into practice within the education sector, and to educate youth on disaster preparedness and risk reduction. The 6th World Congress on Disaster Management (WCDM) is jointly organized by the Government of Uttarakhand, the Disaster Management Initiative & Convergence Society (DMICS), and the Uttarakhand State Council for Science and Technology (UCOST), Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA) 

 

About WCDM

World Congress for Disaster Management (WCDM) is a biennial event that attracts global stakeholders to discuss and solve disaster management challenges. This year's WCDM, with a focus on mountain ecosystems and communities, will be the largest and most important platform of its kind.

This primary objective of 6th WCDM is to discuss and solve climate action and disaster resilience challenges, with a focus on mountain ecosystems and communities. The secondary objective is to position the Himalayan region as a nerve center for climate-adaptive solutions for disaster resilience through the Dehradun Declaration.
